Q: What are the dangers of taking Nexium?
Are there any side effects that the doctor or information brochure may have failed to mention? Does anyone have any experience with this medication? What is your opinion? Should I be taking this? I live in Canada and have health care so I don't have to pay for it. A lot of members of my family have excess stomach acid, I think it may be genetic (The doctor who prescribed it to me said that was likely). My mom and sister both take medication for similar problems. I am very careful about what I eat, so I don't think poor nutrition is the cause of this. I have considered that though.

A: I take it once a day. I have acid reflux so bad that I get heartburn from drinking water. I works great, but you MUST remember to take it EVERY DAY. If you don't your symptoms will return. Like all medications it may take 24 to 48 hours to feel any relief.

Q: Why does my bottle of Nexium tell me not to drink while taking this medication.?
I am not drinking anyways because I am pregnant, but I can't figure out why you can't mix the two. I tried to google it but came up with nothing helpful. Anyone know why?

A: In some people, alcohol can cause acid reflux to be worse. So while there isn't a drug interaction between Nexium and alcohol, it may cause a person to have more symptoms. I'm sure that's why the medicine has that warning on the bottle.

Q: Have any of you taken Nexium or Prevacid for acid reflux while you were pregnant?
It's a category B drug which means it is generally safe in pregnancy but would you take it? And i'm not talking about minor heartburn i mean severe, wanna-die, moaning in pain on the floor, battery acid burning your insides kind of heartburn. That's the kind of heartburn I get if I don't take my medicine. I'm not pregnant but I am thinking about the future and I want your input please. I appreciate it.

A: Actually yes I have because I have severe digestive issues even when not expecting. With each pregnancy since having my gallbladder removed I throw up the entire time and have severe stomach pain. My doctor prescribed Prevacid and I toke that up until they discovered I was allergic to it. Now they have me on Zantac for it and that seams to work well in helping me keep food down. Trust me i understand not wanting to take something but if its severe enough to where you cant hold food down that not good for a baby ether. That's why I decided to go ahead and take it so I could have the vitamins the baby so vitally needs. Just so you know my 11 month old was born perfectly healthy after taking these during pregnancy as well. If your doctor prescribed it then they have taken in to account the risks and I think you will be safe. Good luck and hope this helps.

Q: Why did the doctor prescribe Nexium, and say it's better than?
Prilosec? I've heard people say it's the same thing. Is it or not? Nexium is much more expensive.

A: Yes. It's true that Prilosec is about seven times cheaper than Nexium and the difference between them is minimal. It's just the heavy advertisement of Nexium which makes it a favourite for our medical establishment.

Q: Need to come off Nexium after 2 years?
I read Nexium has wicked rebound effects. I've tried twice to stop it and both times the acid was horrible and I had to take one.. Any way to stop Nexium without so much discomfort? I ve already started taking digestive enzymes and a probiotic weeks ago to help with recent digestion problems I think is caused by taking this drug too long. Ive heard first taking Tagament or Zantac with the Nexium can help someone ease off it.

A: I had been taking Nexium for years, but was having problems with my stomach (especially between meals). I quit about 2 months ago and started taking digestive enzymes. At first, the heartburn was horrible, but it did get better over time. I decided to try a more natural way to control the reflux: to eat smaller meals and shed some weight, since pressure on the esophagus is greater when you are overweight. I have shed 15 pounds so far and feel great. I am trying to not eat too late at night, and I take a Pepcid Complete before bedtime, to control nighttime acid production. My thinking was that the acid that Nexium takes away is needed to digest properly. Once my gnarly stomach went away (thanks to the resumed acid production and digestive enzymes) it was easy to reduce my food intake and lose weight. It also made sense to me that Pepcid, taken at bedtime would not inhibit digestion, but combat the reflux when it is at it's worst. Nexium is overkill, and I will never go back on it!

Q: Whats the diffrence in prevacid and nexium?
just finished my prev pac for h-pylori. I still have ulcers my doc prescribed me prevacid but there was some conflict between the pharmacey and my insurance so they gave me nexium is this still effective for ulcers or not as good for them.

A: As the person above stated, they are similar drugs in the same class. Different people respond differently to the various drugs. One might cause side effects for you, but not for me. One might work better for me and not at all for you. That's one of the reasons that there are several drugs to treat the same problem. Don't you just love it when your insurance company gets to dictate what drug you get? In your case it shouldn't matter - both drugs work well for most people.

Q: What do I need if my stomach hurts like heck and I have had problems with Indegestion and heartburn? Nexium?
I've had conditions in the past regarding my stomach and the pain I feel, real deep pain in my gut for about 5 to 7 seconds and then it goes away. The doctor on base here suggested Aciphex but that doesn't seem to help anymore. I do not wanna go to the doctor and go through all these tests like blood drawn, x-ray on stomach, stool sample, its just too much and I feel their doing it to maximize their incomes and business. Please someone give me some ideas as to what I should take or if someone else has gone through these problems I'd love to hear from you, Sincerely; Mike in Kuwait

A: What you have are very serious symptoms that could be ulcers, acid reflux or even more serious such as cancer. Do yourself a favor and see a doctor. Stop worrying about their incomes and worry about your health instead!

Q: What is a good replacement for nexium that actually works?

A: Losec is the best one. It is expensive so Dr's don't prescribe it as much due to the cost but it does work I know I have taken it for reflux and ulcers. Cured both!!! no side effects either

Q: can I have a chronic sore throat caused by GERD , even if I take nexium?
I've had a sore throat for a month and i'm wondering if I could still have a sore throat caused by GERD, even if I am on nexium. I have no redness and the pain alternates from side to side on my throat.

A: No, GERD affects the stomach and esophagus not the throat. A chronic sore throat could have many causes. Do you smoke? I would make an appointment with your primary care doctor and talk it over with them, it will take a physical exam to figure out what is going on.

Q: where can I find assistance for my nexium medication?
I have insurance but the insurance company refuses to pay for it and I will have to pay 130.00 for 30 pills addition to the other 17 medications that I currently take. They put me on Protonix but that does not help. Please help

A: you could try writing to the manufacturer of Nexium, they may have an assistance program.

Q: Can you take Nexium while taking antibiotics and pain pills?
will this cause any kind of interaction?

A: My last physician actually prescribed me Nexium during antibiotics, in case the antibiotics upset my stomach. My recent physician didn't mention anything when I requested a new prescription for the Nexium.

Q: has any girl ever got a yeast infection from taking nexium?
ive been on nexium for about 2 weeks now and have developed a yeast infection, just was wondering if this might be a side effect.

A: yes, it is possible

Q: What kind of side effects have you experienced taking Nexium?

A: Hi Becky. Nexium is a 'nasty' drug. Reported side-effects include: 1) Vitamin B12 deficiency 2) Mineral deficiencies (calcium, zinc, etc.) 3) Overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine. These acid-inhibiting drugs do not fix the cause of the problem they treat. You would do better to find a doc that is interested in finding and fixing the cause of your symptoms, rather than simply using dangerous drugs to mask the symptoms. If you are interested in educating yourself on the topic of stomach-acid/reflux (GERD) types of problems, Sherry Rogers, M.D. has written an excellent book on the subject called "No More Heartburn". She explains the many causes of heartburn and how to treat/fix the cause. The book is available at Amazon.com. Best wishes and good luck.
