Q: prometrium????
hi ladies, new here. my husband and i have not been "preventing" pregnancy for about 2years now. i just had a dr. visit on april 24th and he put me on prometrium (cd 15)because my periods are irregular. he wants me to chart (again) just to make sure that i am ovulating. he had me chart for about 3 months and everything was fine ( i ovulated every month). i went to have my blood drawn today (on cd21). will that show everything or do i need to get another blood test to check other levels??? i know we need to get a sperm count checked also, but that is another story. why does prometrium make you feel pg??? i get nausea, sore boobs (all day and night), cramps, back ache, headaches, and really tired. any one else have this or has anyone else gotten pg there 1st time using prometrium. we are not aggresively trying because it stresses both of us out.
A: To answer your question about why prometrium makes you feel pregnant: it's synthetic progesterone, and it's the elevated levels of progesterone that's responsible for a lot of pregnancy symtpoms (and that is also responsible for a lot of pre-menstrual symptoms). That's also why, incidentally, when people ask "what are the early signs of pregnancy" a very safe answer is "pretty much any of the signs that tell you your period is coming" -- same hormone at work. Extreme fatigue is *very* common, and if you're only taking prometrium 1x/day you should take it at night, rather than in the morning, for that very reason.
As for the bloodwork, the basic "infertility workup" consists of bloodwork on "CD21" (it should be done at 7 day post-ovulation -- so if you ovulate on, say, day 20 of your cycle the bloodwork shouldn't be done until day 27), and bloodwork done on CD3.
The CD3 testing checks your FSH levels (which indicates ovarian reserves) and estradial. I believe it's also the CD3 testing that checks prolactin and some other things (it's been a while, I don't remember exactly what was checked with what test). Another standard test is the hysterosalpingogram (referring to as the "hsg" -- and I probably botched the spelling anyway) -- this is a test in which dye is run through the woman's fallopian tubes to check for any blockage. It's not a long procedure and generally not anymore uncomfortable that menstrual cramping can be, although if there is a blockage it can be more uncomfortable. There is also some evidence that fertility increases after an hcg is performed because the procedure essentially "cleans out" the tubes.
There's plenty of good information on the Web about basic fertility workups -- one site with some good information can be found at http://www.advancedfertility.com/evaluate.htm. I also recommend the message boards at http://www.tcoyf.com -- they're great for women trying to conceive, generally, and the women will have lots of helpful information and answers about fertility testing, etc. There's probably also great advice from the women on the message boards at http://www.ivfconnections.com (don't let the URL scare you off).
I've taken prometrium and remember the side effects, for sure. But prometrium is not a fertility drug in itself -- for women with low progesterone levels it's hoped the prometrium will help sustain a pregnancy, if pregnancy is achieved (I don't know why your doctor has you on it though, and my experience with it may not be relevant to yours). I did get pregnant while on prometrium, but my issue was recurrent pregnancy loss -- and the prometrium did not help in that regard, sad to say.
I hope all goes well for you...and that you get pregnant before the testing is even done! Best of luck.
Q: Prometrium?
I have irregular periods and am taking prometrium help regulate. My question is does it start or stop your period? For a brief time I was taken off and was given metformin to try and it did not work so I went back to prometrium. While I was trying metformin my period got all messed up and now I've been on my period since Feb. 27 and my dr. put me back on prometrium. I take it only for 10 days and Thursday was my last day on it and since then my period has been heavy and I've never gotten cramps before and now I have cramps. So I was wondering if this is normal. And when should I expect to stop bleeding?
A: believe it or not prometrium is used for both starting and stopping a period. it can take up to 14 days after you finish them to start or stop your period.
if you dont stop by then i would call your dr and see what your other options are.
good luck
Q: How long after starting Prometrium will I start my period?
My period was 11 days late, and I thought I was pregnant so I went in to the dr and he discovered an ovarian cyst. He prescribed me Prometrium 200 MG capsule to take twice a day for 10 days. I have heard that this pill will make your period extra heavy. Is this true? Also, how does this affect my cyst? And how long after beginning this drug will I begin my period? Thanks in advance!!
A: Hi, I'm going on 3 months late and my doc presecribed me Prometrium in the same dosage as you. Originally she said I would get my period on the 4th day after the 10 day cycle but when I didn't have my period on the 5th day she said it could take up to 2 weeks. I'm on day 9 now and still waiting......hope this helps!
Q: Did taking prometrium actually make me start my period?
I had two miscarriages prior to conceiving two healthy baby boys. With each of my pregnancies I had to take a low dose progesterone pill (prometrium) because my progesterone was so low. I have also heard that if your body produces more estrogen than progesterone, you are more likely to have little boy. My husband and I are trying to conceive #3 and although we love our two boys to death, would love to add a little pink to the household. I started taking a 200mg prometrium tablet a day to see if it would help boost my progesterone levels to favor a little girl, but after only 4 days I have started what seems like another period (I just stopped a couple weeks ago). Did the prometrium actually start my period? I thought since it was prescribed for my other two pregnancies it wouldn't be harmful, but I am starting to think I was wrong. Any other ideas for a girl?
A: Not sure about the girl thing. It's more about the sperm than the woman. But prometrium will bring on a period if you did not conceive this time around. What prometrium does is it increased your progesterone during the luteal phase. What this is , is when the uterine lining gets all "fluffy" and ready to sustain a pregnancy. If the progesterone is low, then there isn't enought uterine lining to keep the pregnancy and implant. Prometrium will help with that. But if an egg did not fertilize then a normal period will occur. Periods are when the unterine lining sheds and the body expells the lining which ends up making you bleed. Thus, your period.
It sound to me that you didn't get pregnant this time and so the unterine lining that the prometrium helped create is starting to shed and you are having a period. Good luck next time.
Q: Why does my doctor want me to take Prometrium starting 3 days after ovulation?
This will be my second cycle of Clomid, the 50 mg did not induce ovulation. My doctor wants me to take Clomid 100 mg days 3-7 of my cycle and start 200 mg of Prometrium day 19 or 3 days after a positive ovulation test. I am confused as to why I need to take Prometrium if I may get pregnant? I have read that it is not good to take progesterone while pregnant.
A: Actually, many women (especially those who go through fertility treatments) take progesterone from after ovulation and well into the first trimester. It will cause a better uterine lining for implanation and will support your hormone levels. It is not good to take if you don't need it, but if there is concern about some sort of hormonal imbalance (which could be indicated by the fact that you do not ovulate without Clomid/assistance) then progesterone is a very good thing! Low progesterone can lead to early miscarriages.
ETA - you also do not want to take it before ovulation as it can act as birth control at that point.
Good luck and baby dust!

Q: How does being on Prometrium affect my chances of conceiving?
Has anyone taken this? I haven't had my period since I got of the pill in the end of December. My doctor prescribed Prometrium and told me to take it for seven days. Then I will go in for some blood tests and continue taking it for a while. Since I'm only taking it for seven days each month...will this actually help my chances of conceiving? Or is this just going to be a looong and disappointing road ahead for me?
A: Ive taken it. Prometrium is progesterone in a pill. I had to take it when I got pregnant because my body wasnt producing enough of it. progesterone is a hormone that your body needs for a pregnancy to progress. I copied this for you and also enclosed a link. I hope this helps:
What does progesterone do?
Helps to regulate the menstrual cycle.
Prepares the lining of the uterus for implantation.
Keeps the lining of the uterus thick which is necessary for a successful pregnancy.
Produces a rise in temperature after ovulation, which remains until menstruation occurs.
Creates a nutrient rich environment for the baby by increasing glycogen and arterial blood to the lining of the uterus.
Keeps the uterus from having contractions.
Causes the cervix to thicken and create a mucous plug which prevents bacteria from entering the uterus.
Q: How soon after stopping Prometrium would I start my period?
I am on day 31. I am taking Clomid days 3-7 to ovulate, and then Prometrium on days 18-30 to thicken the uterine walls to aid in implantation. Because of it keeping the lining there, i wouldn't have a period until i stop the meds. I stopped last night and now i either have to wait for a period or to see if i'm pregnant. My nipples have been tender for a week now and i sort of feel like i could start. (when i was pregnant in may (miscarried) i felt as though i could start at any minute). Just wondering if anyone had been on this drug and how long it took to see if they were pregnant or to start their period (if i ovulated this month...based on an ultrasound, it wouldn't have happened until day 20). Thanks.
A: It is unusual that your dr would have you take the prometrium without first verifying ovulation with basal body temping. Generally, you take the clomid, chart your basal body temps, and after you get 3 days of high temps you start on the prometrium--but I'm sure your doctor has you doing it this way for a reason. Also, it is recommended to take a pregnancy test at 14 days past ovulation before stopping the prometrium and if neg. stop the drug but if pg. continue the drug til a blood test can be done to verify high enough progesterone levels. It generally takes 3 days after stopping for your period to come.
Q: Is the pill prometrium and progesterone cream the same?
I have PCOS and i am on meteformin and i am on prometruim and i have been trying to conceive for three years now and i have recently heard about chaste berry and progesterone cream but i have heard one person say that the progesterone cream and the prometrium pills are basically the same! I am so confused and need help! thanks!
A: No no no they are not the same. Progesterone cream over the counter is not even close to the strength that you would need. But Crinone which is a prescribed progesterone vaginal cream is highly effective some say more so than even prometrium.
Change your diet and see what happens. I have PCOS and both times I conceived I changed my diet to a diabetics. See if that helps.

I'm just looking for opinions from experience, Winona
A: Why don't you ask your doctor??? He/she is the best person to consult.

Q: Did you have to take prometrium to regulate your menstrual cycle?
Im taking prometrium for 10 days.. then dr said to wait till my period starts, and then when that happens, i'm supposed to take prometrium again for 10 days.. and then go back to dr. and show them my calendar, and then she will decide what day to take clomid? strange eh? or does ur doc do that as well?
Thanks.
A: That is strange because it is going to cause you to get your period again if you take the prometrium right after a period. I have never heard of this. Is this a fertility Dr or gyn. Sometimes GYN's have no idea what they are doing. They prescribed me clomid cycle days 5-9 then told me to take prometrium alaways on cycle day 11 no matter what. Fertility Dr said that was all wrong....lots of luck to you.
Q: Anyone use prometrium and/or progesterone suppositories during the luteal phase?
My doc prescribed progesterone suppositories during my luteal phase, as a "oh, well, it can't hurt" kind of thing. But, I'm going on vacation and the suppositories need to be kept cold. So, they prescribed prometrium to be taken vaginally instead.
I was wondering if anyone has used either or both of these supplements? Any ideas of the side effects? The warnings on the prometrium seemed scary (risk of stroke, dizziness, sleepiness, etc.)
Thanks!!
A: I have done the progesterone suppositories in the past and, in fact, will start them again tomorrow morning twice a day. It basically "tricks" your body into thinking you're pregnant, so you have similar side effects, especially sore breasts. It was no biggie the first time and I'm expecting the same this time. Is there any chance you can take a little cooler or something until you can put them in a refrigerator? Good luck :)
Q: How long after stopping Progesterone (such as provera or prometrium) Do you have the withdrawal bleed?
I stop taking prometrium tonight and I'm wondering how long it takes for the "period" to start......
A: It could take a couple of days. For me it took three days. I had some really light spotting almost twelve hours later but the full force wasn't until day 3. My dr also told me it could take up from 10-12 days. Good luck!
Q: I am 61 & on an estrogen patch & Prometrium. Is the Prometirum making me have a period?
I still have a regular 5-day period, and am advised by my OB/GYN to continue taking Prometrium until my period stops. Isn't the Prometrium making me have this period? The MD says no, but I'm wondering.
A: Are you taking Prometrium every day, 100mg? Or like for 10 days/month, 200mg/day? If you're taking it every day, 100mg, then it should likely be too little to cause bleeding, except a little breakthrough bleeding. If you are taking 200mg/day, then you're supposed to only bleed on days when you're NOT taking it. Frankly, though, that was not my experience. I bled all the time while taking prometrium. It has a very short half-life in the body, so I'd bleed a lot at certain times of day, then completely stop bleeding at other times of day. I found better results with Provera, which has a much longer half-life in the body, and therefore gives you a steadier dose of progesterone.
Q: Does prometrium cause food aversion and nausea?
I am 8DPO and was wondering if my prometrium 400 mg once a day taken vaginally, would cause me to have metal taste in mouth, nausea and food aversion.
Yesterday I had mild period like cramping at 7 DPO, right ovarian pain, the one I ovulated from and the foods I normally eat dont taste the same or make me want to gag! Anyone else with this.
Please kind answers only!
A: I have been on prometrium for months and yes it definately can cause nausea. I get even really moody with it and it is just not fun. I have pCOS and it can be quite annoying with the prometrium. I will get moody get nautious and sometimes pretty tired. Hope you feel better =)
