Q: My cat has pancreatitus and vomits after she eats. Is there a food that I can give her that might stay down?
She was hospitalized 4 days and given fluids, antibiotics and pain meds. Now she is home and on viokase v powder and mirtazapine. She is vomiting every time she eats and seems to have some pain. What can I feed her that may be bland but nutritious so she won't get too weak? The vet says keep on with what we are doing but I would like some other input. She is 16 and has always been healthy.
A: Meat baby food ( for human infants) Get the chicken or lamb and add plain rice baby cereal ( just a little) and warm water to make a gruel. It's very bland, most cats love it,and it has protein in the meat and some carbs and vitamins in the cereal. You can also get some Nutri-Cal from your vet,and they sell "Cat-Sure" ( a version of Ensure for cats) at most pet stores.I'm right this minute trying to get my 18-year-old cat to eat.He has bad teeth and gums ( feline stomatitis),but is very fragile and my vet and I are trying to get him stronger so he can have his teeth pulled. It's frustrating and you feel so bad for them.Good luck.
Q: My friend has pancreatitis, is it even more dangerous for him to take MDMA also known as Ecstasy?
BACKGROUND--- My friend has been hospitalized numerous times before, not because he took ecstasy, but because of slight alcohol usage. When I mean slight, I mean a couple of beers (2-4 beers every weekend or so), nothing heavy. Recently he awoke to mild stomach pains and again, hospitalized. He's been prescribed Oxycodone to relieve his pain, but only taking it when needed which is not so often. He also has been prescribed Viokase 16 to help his pancreas digest foods. I am not sure if this means anything at all, but I just want to make sure he can pop 'E' without the risk of being hospitalized by taking it.
I am aware of the side effects and dangers that E has on the body and mind; it's just that I am unfamiliar with the side effects on someone who has pancreatitis. My friend knows he's going to pop, he knows when and where as well. He already has this mindset that E will not interfere what-so-ever with his pancreatitis, nor give him any obscurities. I want to know the truth, and or facts. I want my friend to have a great time, and I don't want to regret him taking it. Please.
A: Most people who have pancreatitis have it due to heavy alcohol use.
A brief word about pancreatitis, which can be chronic or accute: The pancreas secretes digestive juices into the intestine via a duct. Actually the juices are inactive untill processed in the intestine. Pancreatitis involves the activation of the juices within the pancreas and digestion from the inside out occurs. It can be fatal, and alcohol/fats are very strong stimulants for this.
The link below will explain it better, but I want to add another comment:
There are other conditions that can appear to be pancreatitis but are not, carefully read the Merck Manual link about other possible conditions.
Some MDMA pills don't contain MDMA but contain piperazine instead. Piperazine usually is used to treat worm infestations, but has CNS side effects. Sometimes, worms won't leave the body, but instead are inspired to run away from anti-worm medicine to strange places, like pluging the bile ducts or other ducts. It is not impossible that his pancreatitis is due to a worm plug induced by piperazine.
