Q: When can I get pravachol and niaspan generic?
I understand we have to wait 7 years before prescription RX can have a generic on the market. I don't know exactly when Pravachol and Niaspan first went on the market. I would like to find out when they would be eligible for generic. I have a donut hole on my Medicare Part D and this can make a difference as to whether I stay with my present carrier.

A: Pravachol does not yet have a generic counterpart and I cannot find out when one will be available, Niaspan however does have multiple generic brands available, go to your pharmacy and ask about Niacin Extended Release and they should be able to point one out. Hope this helps!!

Q: How long is it normal to be on Pravachol?
Is it only taken until the desired result is reached or is it a drug that you have to take for life?

A: If you can't maintain your cholesterol by diet and excercise alone then statins would be indicated. I would say that you should get your levels checked every 1-2 years. You may not need to be on this medication forever.

Q: can pravachol and vytorin be taken at the same time?
my doctor prescribed pravachol for my cholesterol; 1 week later ; the office mailed results of my blood work with a new prescription for vytorin; I was just wondering if these 2 meds for cholesterol can be taken at this time.

A: I don't find much saying not to take at the same time , but I would only take Pravachol. After nearly two years of waiting, the results came out on Monday on the long-awaited heart drug Vytorin — and the news wasn't good. Vytorin's manufacturers, Merck and Schering-Plough, announced that while the drug reduced levels of LDL, or bad cholesterol, in a group of 750 patients, the medication, which has been on the market since 2004, had little effect on the buildup of plaque in the arteries, a harbinger of heart attack and stroke. "The fact that the trial showed a huge LDL reduction, and that things were still going the wrong way [in terms of plaque buildup] is stunning," says Dr. Steven Nissen, chairman of cardiovascular medicine at the Cleveland Clinic and an outspoken critic of the delay in the release of the study results. "This study shows that it matters how you lower cholesterol, not just how much you lower cholesterol."

Q: Is pravachol really effective in lowering cholesterol?

A: yes, it does work well. my patients notice results after a couple weeks.

Q: Should I start Pravachol 40mg / day?

Q: Have you suffered any side effects from statins( Levacor, Zocor, Pravachol, Lipitor, Crestor, etc.)?
Statins users: have you done any research on side effects before you agreed to take the drugs?

A: Statins can cause muscle pain and in some cases actually destroy muscle tissue. Also... statins block the body from producing a chemical called coenzyme Q10. coQ10 is needed by the body for cellular energy and to keep the heartbeat strong. If coQ10 is depleted, it could be a factor in weakening the heartbeat. That could cause a heart attack. Take supplemental CoQ10 if on statins.

Q: pravachol 40mg what are the side effect?

A: Taken from Yahoo Health: Rare cases of muscle problems and liver problems have been associated with the use of pravastatin and other similar medicines. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially if accompanied by a fever or flulike symptoms or yellowing of the skin or eyes, abdominal pain, unexplained fatigue, dark colored urine or pale colored stools. These may be early symptoms of muscle or liver problems. If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking pravastatin and seek emergency medical attention or contact your doctor immediately: an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives); decreased urine or rust-colored urine; or blurred vision. Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take pravastatin and talk to your doctor if you experience gas, bloating, nausea, stomach upset, heartburn, abdominal pain, constipation, or diarrhea; a cough; headache; or insomnia. Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

Q: does pravachol come in a generic?
answer quick please

A: yes. it's called pravastatin

Q: is the PRAVACHOL ( pravastatin sodium ) lead compound or drived from a lead compound ?
well , I need also to know what is lead compound mean. if any body help me please!!

A: The term lead compound is used in chemistry more as research terminology, I supose pravacol is modified from its original compound so it shouldn´t be a lead compound, read below. Pravastatin (marketed as Pravachol or Selektine) is a member of the drug class of statins, used for lowering cholesterol and preventing cardiovascular disease. Initially known as CS-514, it was originally identified in a bacterium called Nocardia autotrophica by researchers of the Sankyo Pharma Inc..It is presently being marketed outside Japan by the pharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers Squibb. A lead compound (i.e. the "leading" compound, not lead metal) in drug discovery is a chemical compound that has pharmacological or biological activity and whose chemical structure is used as a starting point for chemical modifications in order to improve potency, selectivity, or pharmacokinetic parameters.
